Is this not a thing yet? it would be nice to have it!
I don't know if there's a need for this, most clients such as macOS and iOS automatically do this. No need to have in on the server.
Android (at least on my S23) in combination with DavX does not do this automatically. It requires an existing calendar with birthdays on server-side. At least from what I was able to find out.

+1 the same thing with S22. It would be really grate to have this function.
Installed Birthday adapter and it worked great without changing my client. https://github.com/Android-BD/birthday-adapter Best
Thunderbird also doesn't have this feature, so having the server provide one would be great.

I've been using https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/birthday-calendar/ and it works really well.

Oh thank you for that, I keep forgetting Thunderbird has plugins. I still think it should be a calendar baked into Baikal. Once the Home Assistant issue is resolved, it'd be nice to have that calendar able to be pulled in like my old Nextcloud instance was.

" calendar baked into Baikal " => yes but I still think it should be optional, not everyone wants that feature as most clients (iOS, macOS, Thunderbird ext., RoundCube etc.) have ways around that and it may cause duplicates.

Oh yeah, it should be an opt-in feature.
I wish to put it to the project that a contact/calendar solution such as Baikal should aim to provide its users with a means to get reminders of contacts birthdays and other anniversaries. I would argue this is a fundamental core purpose of such a solution.
A feature request was made ~10 years ago, but seems to have been forgotten about during all the changes in the project over succeeding years:
