API: overlay icon to thumbnails with "favorite" functionality? #152

How would you recommend adding an overlay icon to thumbnails that allow for a simple "favorite" feature, like in the most simple case just save all the image urls the user selected as favorites in an array?

I read and understand the plugin api, however I can not see any supported way to add an icon overlay with an event listener to a thumbnail. Before hacking it "somehow" in I think i would be cool if you added an API for such a thing, so this can be another plugin.
