[x] secure venue (ideally north san antonio) - Geekdom [x] set time/date (a Thursday at 6:30 or 7, on Aug. 24th or later) [x] speaker: Meghann Agarwal [x] topic: map-reduce/spark

She is a Data Scientist and runs Women in Data Science meetup in austin. She kindly agreed to visit us here in san antonio and give a hands-on workshop on MapReduce/Spark. Based on our last conversation, she is available the first 2 weeks in August, or Thursday, August 24th.

her response:

Great to meet you, too. A Thursday evening after work around 6:30pm or 7pm is good for me. Is that when you usually hold your meetup? Thursday, August 24th or later is best for me since there's now some ambiguity about kids and camp schedules right before they head back to school in August.

I can make the presentation shorter or longer depending on how much time you'd like to allot. I'll just have people sign up for Databricks Community Edition rather than setting up Spark on their machines, so that will speed up the typical installation time to get going on the code. The presentation will look something like this, but updated to include background on MapReduce and Hadoop: https://mepa.github.io/pyladies-pyspark/#/.

It would be good if the venue's in North San Antonio, if possible, but I'll drive wherever. It just needs space for people to open their laptops and work on the exercises.

I think hearing about applications of Spark, Hadoop, etc. in lightning talks or something of the sort could be interesting for audience members, too. Sometimes just knowing when or why one would turn to these sorts of tools can be illuminating.

What is the typical background of your meetup attendees?
