do a round of memory allocation profiling #91

Suddenly SMC got really slow for in the browser, but fortunately I was able to pull up the console and get a profile... and it really is just slow do to a massive garbage collection. It ran like this for a while, then crashed. So there would be a lot of benefit to systematically doing some memory profiling and improving things.

any idea what has triggered this? i usually have it open in a background tab. i can try to do some profiling and look at differences ...
