error with git 1.7 #50

This line:

https://github.com/robertwb/sage-patchbot/blob/master/src/patchbot.py#L306

causes an error with my version of git (1.7) but does work with version 1.8. Could it be rewritten to be compatible with a wider range of git versions?

We are now shipping git 2.3.0 with sage. This question is no longer relevant.
