Second attempt. Managed to secure a build log file. https://github.com/tiborh/logs/blob/master/firefox_build.log
It seems that all is OK now. A new emerge has solved the problem:
$ sudo emerge -uDU --keep-going --with-bdeps=y @world

Later, the same error came back after the dependency issues got resolved. (bothering symptoms: memory at 100%, CPU load at 100% or very close to that, in all four cores, unresponsiveness to mouse or keyboard actions) As the build often went on for days without any success, I purchased a new pi with 8GB RAM. After almost two days, the system upgrade was successful. Current Firefox version: 80.0.1-r1.
HW: raspberry pi 4 4GB model.
