デフォルトブランチ名の変更

https://github.com/github/renaming#on-october-1-2020-newly-created-repositories-will-default-to-main によると 2020/10/1 以降に作成されるリポジトリのデフォルトブランチは main に代わるようです。

この変化に先取りして既存のリポジトリのデフォルトブランチを main に変えませんか?

何故だ！というのが一番気になったわけですが、アナウンスの本文に書いてありました。

Why main? main is the most popular replacement for master that we’re seeing across GitHub. We like it because it’s short, it keeps your muscle memory intact, and it translates well across most languages.

main ってのは master の代わりとして使われる代表的な代替名です。 1文字でも短い方が覚えやすい ですし main なら英語以外の多くの言語で正しく翻訳できます。

まぁ、そうですよね・・・。

メンテする人が好きにやって構わんと思うので反対はしないです。 GitHub側で勝手に変更作業を始めるわけではなさそうなので あえてやらんでも… とも思いますけど :smiley:

このリポジトリのデフォルトブランチは master で、このリポジトリは main で、という判断が必要な時点で muscle memory は全然使い物にならんので、自分のアカウントのデフォルトブランチは master に戻しました。

これまでも、master がデフォルトの場合とdeveopがデフォルトの場合が混ざっているのはあったんでけど、 master main develop と三種類になったら混乱しますね。
