Improve link sensitivity for podcast feed links (e.g. from Podsearch) #2

Gerald: "Here's an example. With Podsearch, put in "stories " (without quotation marks). For me, the first podcast it shows is The Latest Stories from Here's the Thing. The second is The Vinyl Cafe. When I click the XML buttons, links show up for Podcast Addict (and for all my browsers) for BOTH. But for Podcatcher Deluxe, a link shows up for Vinyl Cafe but not for Here's the Thing. Likewise PD "sees" the third but not the fourth in that list (whereas P. Addict sees both). Same for you?"

John: "I'm used to podcast apps with built-in directories and/or search (like Stitcher, Podkicker, Podcast Addict, etc), and have little experience with adding podcasts via websites. Can you point me to some big, comprehensive directories where I can easily subscribe to podcasts by just clicking on a link and choosing your app from the list that pops up? I tried the iTunes directory, but none of the links I clicked on brought up Simple Podcatcher as an option. However, I was usually able to add podcasts from their respective homepages. I could also add podcasts to your app from the Podsearch app, from the maker of Podkicker.

Actually, Podkicker was the one podcast app that came up as an option for every type of podcast link I clicked. Simple Podcatcher often was not listed as an option, which seems somewhat problematic for a podcast app without a built-in directory or search. Once I start testing Podcatcher Deluxe I can give you specific examples, if you like."

Hi Gerald, I see the same behaviour. The reason lies in how the URL are matched to actions. I can define which kind of URLs (feed addresses) are recognized by the Podcatcher app. Defining very broad ones (e.g. everything starting with "http://") would probably be a bit annoying (but seems to be what PodcastAddict does). In contrast, my definition seems to be to narrow at the moment. I will test and fix that. (When I tested this earlier with PodSearch, by chance all the once I tried worked...) - K.

John: OK, I tried out a bunch of podcast directories and some other pages. I couldn't decide which was the best podcast directory - there were so many! Also, whether a link worked or not was dependent on the link itself, not the directory it was in (but you probably knew that).

Late in my search I came across a couple useful sites where you can go down a list testing different RSS links. These might be useful for you to test against your app. Some links worked, some didn't:

Here are some other specific examples:

Examples of pages that work with Podkicker or Podcast Addict, but not with Podcatcher Deluxe (go to the page and click the feed link):

Example of a feed that worked, but took a long time to subscribe with Podcatcher Deluxe vs. a short time with Podkicker:
