Visualize SRKW occupancy and salmon dynamics

It would be exciting to have a dashboard that visualizes the dance that Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW) do with Pacific salmon. It could at least enable exploration of historic data, but might also move toward contextualizing movement that is increasingly observed in real time. In the longer run, it might become the community science "game" that Val envisioned in which anyone -- from elementary students to post-docs to naturalists to arm-chair conservationists -- can try to predict where the three SRKW pods will go in the next 24 hrs, likely in an active learning framework with AI.

Initial visualization possibilities could include:

1. temporal juxtaposition of in-river salmon counts (or CPUE) with SRKW occupancy metrics a. Zoe Liu working on this in 2022-23 (prototype | code)
2. spatial juxtapositions of SRKW and salmon movement within the marine environment (These may be limited by a paucity of information about salmon distribution in the marine environment.)

Possible sources of salmon data, in rough order of priority for SRKW conservation insights & monitoring:

• [X] Albion Test Fishery Chinook CPUE (Catch Per Unit Effort)
• [ ] WDFW creel reports (Puget Sound: current year daily reports, including same-day results | annual archive; creel reports for all WA regions and species, including Columbia Bar buoy and Olympic Peninsula)
• [ ] study/leverage the WDFW Puget Sound Chinook Mark-Selective Fishery Sampling Methods?
• [ ] study/leverage the Voluntary Trip Report program for selective Chinook and coho fisheries occurring in Marine Areas 1 through 13?
• [ ] closer collaboration with sports fisheries in US and Canada (fisher forums? community science projects?)
• [ ] In the 2nd orca vital sign occupancy indicator workshop, Laura Koehn (NOAA), mentioned looking at data used by the Pacific Fisheries Management Council to estimate seasonal (fall, spring, summer) salmon abundance by region, specifically by "pairing the Fram model with the Shelton Distribution Models."
• [ ] Ettinger et al., 2022 used WDFW weekly escapement reports for salmon returning to rivers and hatcheries in Puget Sound proper
• [ ] DFO reports on salmon (escapement) in British Columbia rivers?
• [ ] data sharing with the Hydra repository for active acoustic fish tag detections -- most of which are in the marine environment, I believe
• [ ] hydroacoustic surveys of salmonids (mobile [John Horne at UW; Trites lab at UBC] or fixed [SoG ADCP?])
• [ ] recoveries from ocean fisheries (e.g. this 2018 article?)
• [ ] recreational fishery records (derbies?)
• [ ] commercial fishery records?
• [ ] bycatch records (e.g. Dave Bain mentioned that bycatch in some fisheries within the Gulf of Alaska may be 50% salmon of US origin?!)
• [ ] AI-assisted classification of salmon side-view images, usually in rivers or at dams, but maybe soon in the marine environment? Examples include the Whoosh fish-sorting Passage Portal invention and North/central BC publication in 2023 (CBC article | publication | salmon-computer-vision repo)

Any open code and deployed apps that prove useful for SRKWs could likely be used to help understand the movements of Northern Resident Killer Whales (NRKWs) as well.
