Visualize SRKW occupancy and salmon dynamics #23

It would be exciting to have a dashboard that visualizes the dance that Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW) do with Pacific salmon. It could at least enable exploration of historic data, but might also move toward contextualizing movement that is increasingly observed in real time. In the longer run, it might become the community science "game" that Val envisioned in which anyone -- from elementary students to post-docs to naturalists to arm-chair conservationists -- can try to predict where the three SRKW pods will go in the next 24 hrs, likely in an active learning framework with AI.

Initial visualization possibilities could include:

  1. temporal juxtaposition of in-river salmon counts (or CPUE) with SRKW occupancy metrics a. Zoe Liu working on this in 2022-23 (prototype | code)
  2. spatial juxtapositions of SRKW and salmon movement within the marine environment (These may be limited by a paucity of information about salmon distribution in the marine environment.)

Possible sources of salmon data, in rough order of priority for SRKW conservation insights & monitoring:

Any open code and deployed apps that prove useful for SRKWs could likely be used to help understand the movements of Northern Resident Killer Whales (NRKWs) as well.

Converting from a project card to an issue so that the text-content is searchable within the salish-sea organization!

Also taking notes here to update the top level post.

Maybe smart to just align with fishery management regions or combinations of them used in WDFW mark recapture methodology?
