Using Whale Alert on iOS recently -- while studying the shiny new 2024 Canadian conservation areas -- I noticed there was no delineation of the voluntary "No-go" zone in Haro Strait:
Maybe the No-Go zone and similar local features could be added to Whale Alert and Ocean Alert via future updates of the Protected Seas MPA+ database?
Below are links to it's description, as well as a short list of other local information that might be worth adding.
Here is a link to a WDFW page with a map of the 1/4 mile "strip" along the west side and a 1/2 mile radius "bubble" around Lime Kiln State Park:
In the same vein, I wonder if it would be valuable for recreational boats and other WA/OA users to also add these local geospatial resources:
[ ] Other parts of the Marine Stewardship Area (which seems to have a smaller no-go zone than the WDFW site's map!):
I can probably put you in touch with someone at the San Juan County Marine Resources Committee who likely has all/most of these geo-referenced and easily shareable...
Also, as a sailor I'd like these, too!
[ ] Most commonly hit rocks and shoals in the San Juans:
And finally, it might be appropriate for pinniped conservation to also highlight smaller National Wildlife Refuge areas where seals and sea lions haulout, or marine birds are protected. For example, I'd recommend a perimeter around each of the islets, like Low Island, that show up with an NWR label once you zoom in enough on NOAA's marine chart (but aren't shown on the marine chart within the Whale Alert app):
Only on some paper/ENC/PDF NOAA charts is the NWR label explained:
