I am not sure it is possible to integrate pi-hole with the way saltbox works, I can't remember why exactly but it may have been to do with the port. It's not recommended to run on a remotely accessible server for security reasons but it can be done. We do have many people running home servers nowadays so it might be worth revisiting on that basis.

That's the main problem, at home it will be fine, but if deployed on a server at a provider, they will shutdown it immediately and send you emails about it. "Public DNS server". But some options remains:

I toyed with running it "privately" through the VPN that ties my home physical clients to my SB dedi, but I didn't like the result so I stuck to just a standard Raspi install. The other remote options seem questionable (why would the SB host or containers need ad blocking?) or too complex to be worth it.

Ultimately I don't see it as a good fit for SB, and it seems practically unmaintainable, so I have no interest in working on a role personally.

Moving this to sandpit - I don't feel like it is an ethical fit for sandbox.

shouldn't saltyorg/Sandbox#3 cover this? I think thats when the pihole_unbound stuff was added

This link should do the trick. from what I understand, its worked for a few people in saltbox. worth a try at least.
