How to do primary research for Whose Data?
A company or organization that Whose Data? is researching is called a ‘case’.
Whose Data is working to answer two questions about each case:
For more information on our research goals, check out this overview.
Helping to verify an open case involves doing desk/online research and/or contacting organizations. If you're new to the project, this is a great way to start contributing!
How to do primary research for Whose Data?
The goal with primary research is to have the organization itself to verify and/or add additional information to the case.
Look at the list of cases that need primary research and choose one to work on
Search online to find an email address or phone number associated with the organization your case focuses on
Reach out to them using the email template below as a guideline. If there's a specific question (eg. - Do I legally own the data this org has about me?- Can I see all the data they have about me, for free?) you're unable to answer, or other specific pieces of information you're unable to find through secondary research, be sure to mention these explicitly in your email.
Add a comment to this issue below, with the following information:
Update your comment when you hear back, plus add any additional information you receive to the case itself by following the instructions here.
TEMPLATE EMAIL
SUBJECT: Inquiry about personal data BODY: Dear [contact or organization name],
I am a volunteer with WhoseData.ca : an open source project that aims to make it easier for Canadians to answer key questions about who owns — and what options we have to control — data collected about us, via common online (eg. social media platforms) and offline (eg. health records) activities.
We are researching your organization, and you can see our initial findings here [link to the case on GitHub].
[IF RELEVANT: I haven't been able to determine whether I, as a Canadian citizen, legally own the data you have about it. Would you be able to confirm whether I or your organization legally own this data?]
We would greatly appreciate it if you or one of your colleagues would be able to verify that the information we have gathered is correct, and/or if there is any additional information you would like to add.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Many thanks for your time.
Best, [your name]
