The goal of this pull request is mostly to bring the project up to date with current Rust standards making it easier to extend the functionality in the future.

There are no breaking changes.

Copy of the changelog:

README badges for easy access to the docs etc.
Flatten the module structure: e.g. plugin/mod.rs changed into plugin.rs
Some refactoring for readability
Project formatting
Updated deprecated code
Removed editor specific config files

Thanks for the contribution. These changes look good, and now something is finally happening in this repository after I mostly ignored it for three years.
