Wrong determination of file extension

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Get PNG Image. Rename it's extension to JPG.
2. Go to "Add Gallery / Images".
3. Try to upload.

Expected: successfully uploaded image.
Get: Warnings and in result wrong upload and can't edit thumbnail.

NextGEN Gallery Version 1.6.2
As i see, this problem is occurring in 1.7.3 version also.

Attached patch for file lib/gd.thumbnail.inc.php generated in NetBeans IDE.
