Sandboxie Classic — Windows Explorer won't run in sandbox after terminating VSCode process in sandboxie #3419

Describe what you noticed and did

So I had a Visual Studio Code process running in my DefaultBox, and I decided to close it by terminating all processes with Sandboxie control (it was the only process running within the sandbox), and after that I decided to open up windows explorer in my defaultbox, but nothing happened, except for Start.exe and those other two Sandboxie programs showing for a split second and then closing in the processes window.

How often did you encounter it so far?

This never happened before I pressed "terminate all processes" just now

Affected program

Windows Explorer

Download link

Not relevant

Where is the program located?

The program is installed both inside and outside the sandbox.

Expected behavior

Windows Explorer should start normally like it did in my sandbox.

What is your Windows edition and version?

Windows 10 Home Edition 20H2

In which Windows account you have this problem?

Not relevant to my request.

Please mention any installed security software

Windows Defender

What version of Sandboxie are you running?

Sandboxie Classic v5.66.4 32bit

Is it a new installation of Sandboxie?

I recently did a new clean installation.

Is it a regression?

No response

In which sandbox type you have this problem?

In a standard isolation sandbox (yellow sandbox icon).

Can you reproduce this problem on a new empty sandbox?

Interestingly, yes. I can confirm it also on a new empty sandbox, even with completely new settings.

After my PC just restarted itself after it gave me a 1 minute warning, the problem seems to have been fixed. I did also notice that since a day ago, my volume keys stopped working, and also right after it gave me the 1 minute warning, my incognito chrome window new tab page became blank (but everything else worked fine and I was able to save some of my work in paint.net)

Any clues as to how this chain of events may have started? I did notice that when I left my PC on went I went to sleep, my PC didn't sleep and my keyboard stayed alit until I woke up and it was still lit up and my PC hadn't slept. Maybe it was because I was running a game inside sandboxie for that time? It may also have been how my PC session started for that time. It started after a power break, immediately after it turned off. Where do I find the details of this failure?

Did this happen again after the restart you mentioned?

trewqaGGG commented 11 months ago

No, just that once. The only time in my life actually, I think.

Maybe, you just had bad luck once. There could be many things, like a compatibility issue that was triggered with the older version of Windows 10 and that version of Sandboxie.
