Add mlp backend #138

Closes #128 The code is a bit messy; some of the front-end work should handle this, as we were not entirely sure how to generalize the components for other potential scenarios going forward.

This PR is now dependent on #140 being merged.

Finally merging all of this into master. Note: this merge is primarily just to get all these demos accessible to everyone instead of remaining on this branch, so the code here is definitely unfinished - no need to check for functionality of the new demos, just make sure nothing is messed up on the rest of the site.
