vagrant-spk is a tool for packaging apps for Sandstorm, a self-hosting platform! While Sandstorm itself can be somewhat of a challenging platform to jump into as a developer, vagrant-spk is not. I have documented some projects here: https://github.com/sandstorm-io/vagrant-spk/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3Agood-first-issue which I believe shouldn't require a ton of understanding of Sandstorm overall to tackle.
Note that while I am only tagging the vagrant-spk repo for Hacktoberfest, I am not opposed to ensuring people get credit for other projects if they end up branching out, but reach out to me first to find out if it's something likely to produce fruit.
