List of words starting from a particular letter #21

Let me put forth one issue, which I faced while using the website. In India, the word lists are also used for naming purpose. For example, I have named both of my son's names based on the word list of MW online. Most of indians believe in naming the children with words starting from a particular letter or a set of letters based on some moon / son calculations / zodiac. The best way I could do was --> Go to the advance search -> search words starting with 's' -> Show all results. And then search from the word list. Sorry for throwing such wide queries on your server. But I couldn't think of a better way.

Question - would it be possible to provide readymade lists of words starting from different letters rather than fetching them from database ?

Dhaval, good to see you come by, it's just time. So before naming your baby you wanted to find words starting with "s-: with several other letter in the word as well? Would want to know more about the astrological and based on it linguistic requirements of naming in India.

What if you just had a list of ALL words in the dictionary (say, MW), in alphabetical order, that you could download and examine in a text editor. Would this get at what you're looking for?

Most of indians believe in naming the children with words starting from a particular letter or a set of letters based on some moon / sun calculations / zodiac.

I am not aware of naming children based on the sun positions, but I do know that Hindus generally name their children based on the stellar lunar position. The whole zodiac of 360 deg. is divided into 12 raashis and 27 nakshatras, and each nakshatra further into 4 subdivisions, thus total 108 divisions. Each division consists of 3 deg. 20 min. Here are the initial letters corresponding to each division, called caraNaakshara.

Since no name can begin with ङ or ञा, the Maharashtrian Panchanga Makers have decided that these letters be replaced respectively with गं ज्ञा.

So we need 9 x 12 possible lists, great, thanks, Narayan. Never knew before - we could spread Sanskrit by making easy to find Sanskrit names. Dhaval, would it have helped you to have the list ordered in such a way is it not enough?

prasadnm commented 10 years ago

Just one point that I forgot to mention.

In the list, there is no difference between short and long vowels for the purpose of naming a baby. For example, "चू चे चो ला ली लू ले लो आ" may also be respectively taken as "चु चै चौ ल लि लु लै लौ अ". --- Narayan Prasad

Now we have sanhw1.txt. So this problem is solved, at least for coders.
