Sigla - Githubissues

Those two characters (® and †) are mentioned in the Developer's Documentation for PW, under the list of extended Ascii characters. The explanations are no doubt responses from Thomas to my questions at some time; these explanations may be clues, but they are likely incomplete explanations. In the older digitizations (MW, PW, PWG, etc.), Thomas apparently did some ad-hoc markup, such as this, but he did not bother much with documentation. Thus, there is likely some significance to the markup you noticed, but considerable further study would be required to be sure of the significance.

In the display, I have left these extended ascii characters, of whose significance I am unsure. I could alter the displays to hide these characters (though I have difficulty in PHP in accurately applying regexp substitutions to extended ascii characters.)

For instance, it might be that the ®*Clypea_hernandifolia kind of markup is indeed always genus-species. In MW markup, I added xml markup such as

<bio>Clypea hernandifolia</bio>     for animals

and these are shown in a different color in the displays.

If we knew for sure what these markups in PW represent, we could similarly deal with them in PW.

It might be that PW's asterisk also indicates genus-species kind of words - this is a speculation.
