Line 248530: VIṢṆU or KṚṢṆA, and represented in delineations of him by {??}.
VIṢṆU or KṚṢṆA, and represented in delineations of him by ❈.
%% This ❈ character (u+2748) belongs to Dingbats block of Unicode, which is almost close to the symbol (but rotated by 45 degrees).
%% Probably it is better to have it as an embedded picture (cropped from the scan). BUR has a better image (see L.117751, p.661) than WIL.

Probably it is better to have it as an embedded picture - only if in addition to.

funderburkjim commented 3 years ago

@gasyoun Have we used an embedded image in some dictionary? Do you recall the details?

Andhrabharati commented 3 years ago

@funderburkjim

There are two images at the CDSL home page (html)-

<img src="/images/cologne_univ_seal.gif" id="logo" alt="IITS" title="Cologne Sanskrit Lexicon"/>

and

`<img src="/images/clarin-400x400.png" `
   `width="90px" height="90px"`
`title="CLARIN - European Research Infrastructure for Language Resources and Technology" >`

Having a facility to add the images at web pages would allow many "pictures" in VCP and SKD to be displayed, if added to the text file in some manner.

Also a desideratum is to have a facility to render "tables" as tables in display.

Andhrabharati commented 3 years ago

BTW, CLARIN stands for "Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure" [by European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC)]

not "CLARIN - European Research Infrastructure for Language Resources and Technology"

funderburkjim commented 3 years ago

Re home page images. The question is not regarding the html syntax for writing an image, such as on the homepage.

Rather, the question is how, in wil.txt, to add markup so that the displays

<L>39214<pc>864<k1>SrIvatsa<k2>SrIvatsa
{#SrIvatsa#}¦ m. ({#-tsaH#})
.²1 VIṢṆU.
.²2 A particular mark, usually said to be a curl of hair, on the breast of
VIṢṆU or KṚṢṆA, and represented in delineations of him by ❈. <<< HOW TO REPLACE THIS BY IMAGE?
.²3 A hole in a wall made for felonious purposes.
.²4 The emblem of the tenth {%Jina,%} or the mark above ascribed to VIṢṆU or
KṚṢṆA.

one.dtd clue

In one.dtd there may be a clue: 'pic' or 'Picture':

      4:<!ENTITY % body_elts "b | i | s |div | alt | symbol | F | br | H | root |lb | P | lang | sup | pic | ls |ab|lbinfo|s1|lex|vlex|C|Poem|note|nsi |sic|is|bot|VN|type|hom|mark|edit|bio|etym|pb|pc|pcol|shortlong|srs|info|ns|span" >
     28:<!ELEMENT pic EMPTY >
     58:<!ATTLIST div n (P | 2 | 3 | lb |pfx |1 | I | xe | xs |p|H|P1|HI|F|NI|m|o|4|v|E|Poem|Picture|lex|to|vp|Q) #IMPLIED>
     66:<!ATTLIST pic name CDATA #REQUIRED>
     92:<!ATTLIST mark n (P | H | Picture) #REQUIRED>

Next, to find the (very few) instances of these in some xxx.txt,

Andhrabharati commented 3 years ago

VCP had those <Picture> markers!

Here is the one I was thinking of, in Benfey:

image

and here is the markup in ben.txt

represented by <pic name='vatsa.png'/>,

And here is the location of the png file in csl-websanlexicon: https://github.com/sanskrit-lexicon/csl-websanlexicon/blob/master/v02/distinctfiles/ben/web/images/vatsa.png

One surprise : This vatsa image in benfey is also appropriate for the Wilson SrIvatsa image!

So we could replace the unicode symbol in wil.txt with <pic name='vatsa.png'/>, and put a copy of vatsa.png in distinctfiles/wil/web/images/ directory.

funderburkjim commented 3 years ago

One current bug is that in simple search, the image isn't found. This is likely soluble by some change to the code in basicdisplay.php for csl-apidev and/or csl-websanlexicon.

One surprise : This vatsa image in benfey is also appropriate for the Wilson SrIvatsa image!

And for BUR too. (After all, all of them are talking about the same word and same symbol!)

But Benfey's symbol is slightly different than the other two (which are similar).

Andhrabharati commented 3 years ago

Interestingly, Benfey's source (Johnson's Selections) has the symbol just as in WIL and BUR. https://archive.org/details/selectionsfromma00john/page/242/mode/1up

Andhrabharati commented 3 years ago

This vatsa image in benfey

It is not a vatsa image, it is for the Comp. Śrī-vatsa.
