Glyphs for syc missing #23

syc? as in Classical Syriac? Glyphs required for Classical Syriac would requrire the ʾEsṭrangēlā version of the glyphs. If support is added for modern Syriac languages such as Assyrian (aii) or Chaldean (cld) would require Madnḥāyā version of the script, While other language labels may require Serṭā versions of the glyphs.

Support for the following language labels using east Syriac script, and a font like East Syriac Adiabene would be desirable

@andjc In practice, what is really needed is the glyphs that would be good for the language here: https://arc.wikipedia.org/ . The name of that language as we define it today is "ܐܪܡܝܐ". Which version would work best for it? The font that the editors of that Wikipedia requested is Estrangelo Edessa.

This is where things get confusing. The code arc., used in that wikipedia refers to a dead language Classical Aramaic. Which never used the Syriac script.

So from language code I do not now which specific neo-aramaic language is being used, so cannot suggest which script should be used. I did notice at least one user adding a comment to talk page requesting west Syriac be used for the wiki due to issues around legibility and readability.

But this aspect of wikipedia is a mess.

Not sure if the reasons of editors for using the specified font are dialect basses, idea l, religious, political or just practical, or it is the font that ships with windows.

@andjc Yes - some codes are used in Wikipedia in a non-standard way, and this is one of them. They should be changed some day, but that has to wait for technical reasons. Until that done, the immediate use for the Autonym font is for names of Wikipedia languages, so it should be "ܐܪܡܝܐ" and the language of that Wikipedia even if the code is not precisely correct.

Yes, but which of the various neo-aramaic languages is it?

And what will happen if other neo-Aramaic languages establish wikis? Especially since the same autonym may be used for different languages, and also require different scripts. A problem for the future I guess.

Although for internal use within our projects it may be worth me forking and diverging from wikipedia practice with respect to which of the Syriac scripts are used.
