As a user i want the thumbnails to be displayed 1:1 aspect ratio. Currently uploaded images of other resolution like in the attached screenshot, do adjust the aspect ratio to 1:1

In the CMS, it's a bit hard to force users to upload images in the 16:9 resolution - since the same media library is used for content images and images used as POI icons. Could you somehow crop the image you get from the CMS to the aspect ratio you need with CSS?

<~timo.ludwig> i'm with you that it's difficult to force the user, but at least add a info hint or sth for better results. Then we have a good picture for detail view and can use "object-fit:fill" for thumbnail
