Crackling sound #9

Open 9V1KG opened 3 years ago

9V1KG commented 3 years ago

After 40 minutes of operation during the Sunday afternoon net, the crackling audio resumes. Readability down from 5 to 3. Signal field strength stable. (S5 w/o preamp at my location, 5 el log per + IC7300)

Many thanks for the report. It's really helpful to have a log of these, even if we can't take useful action on some of them immediately. Some diagnosis involves looking back at the chronology of maintenance actions and user reports to work out when things changed. Your reports are particularly useful because you're at the edge of the viable coverage area, therefore more marginal, and therefore more sensitive to problems.

This report is particularly interesting, although I can't yet see what we can do about it. We have assumed to date that worsening SNR or specific noise during a net or ragchew has been the result of overheating and throttling lowering the output power and therefore causing your AGC to rise. With a constant field strength at your end, that clearly isn't the case. I'll keep this one open for the time being; I'll be interested in updates over the next few weeks if you're inclined to provide them.
