It's supposed to be possible to bring up the soft keyboard with some button
(you may
have to map "Search Button" to "Virtual Keyboard" through the "Preferences"
screen).
But, even if that works, it is quite limiting in that it appears that the
virtual
keyboard has no way of accessing the Ctrl commands (like ^D to kick), and the
format
of the screen also would make it hard to play. The next version which I'm
working on
now will have a much better soft keyboard and have the message/status bars
separate
from the map, so hopefully that will work for you once it's out.

I uploaded a preview build of the next version, with much improved virtual
keyboard.
It's here: http://nethack-android.googlecode.com/files/NetHack-1.2.1-alpha.apk.
It
should be playable (for touchscreen users, much more so than the previous
version),
but still has some bugs and issues I want to sort out before officially
releasing it.
If you try it out, please let me know if you have any simple suggestions on how
to
make the virtual keyboard more useful.

It 'closes unexpectedly' (I would call it a crash :)

OK, odd. If you have the SDK installed and can run it with "abd logcat", it
would be
good to see if there is any useful information in the output spew. After having
fixed
the previous issue that could cause crashes on startup (on Droid, for example),
I
don't really have a clue for what could be causing it this time. Thanks for
having
tried it out though.

Yes, what happens is that it opens up an empty screen with a cursor in the top
left
corner, and a soft keyboard at the bottom. Then I get the "Sorry! The
application
NetHack (process com.nethackff) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
[Force
close]" window over it.
And no, I don't have an SDK installed. If you tell me its easy to install and
use for
what you suggest I shall try it however.

Tried it onmy HTC hero too, the game simply crashes and do nothing upstart.
I'll try
installing the SDK to give you an hand on this one.

The new version 1.2.1 is out. It has much better virtual keyboard support, as
mentioned earlier. Sure hope it doesn't crash on startup (though it might on
some Samsungs, and perhaps some versions of Cyanogenmod), but if it does, it's
better to keep track of that as a separate bug.
