Whoops! I'm really sorry for the quadruple post but when I clicked "Post" it
gave me
what seemed to be an error message, and I assumed it wasn't posted.

Can you give any more details? Does this happen 100% to you from a fresh
install?
Does it happen 100% for you after it started happening? Or, was it just
something
that happened once? If it worked for you initially and now this keeps
happening, try
uninstalling and reinstalling again, in case some temporary file got left behind
somehow that it's having trouble cleaning up now. I don't recall having seen
this
problem myself and I don't think anybody else reported it. Anyway, will look at
the
code and see exactly what it's trying to do before printing that error message,
and
try to think of what could have gone wrong. Thanks for reporting.

It's never worked, and it happens every boot. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling,
and the problem persists.

Have this issue on Samsung Moment, Android 2.1, Kernel 2.6.29, Build ECLAIR.DE03

Fresh install, same exact problem as OP's description.

If you had this problem before, can you please help out by downloading this new
version:
http://nethack-android.googlecode.com/files/NetHack-1.2.2-alpha.apk
I'm hoping that it will fix crashes on startup, by not relying on external
commands (chmod, mkdir) and by more properly obtaining the path to the
application's files. Please report back here with the results. Even if you
didn't have this crash before, I would be interested in knowing that the new
version works, so I don't introduce any new problem.

I had a force close problem on HTC Hero running eclair and this alpha solved
that too.

On 1.2.1 it would say:
"Sorry! The application NetHack (process com.nethackff) has stopped
unexpectedly. Please try again."
Each time i'd try to open it.

Thx for the fix ^^

Hi. Awesome idea to port Nethack to Android.

I have testet both 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 on my Samsung Galaxy Spica, on Android 2.1:
Each time I get the "Cannot lock perm for unknown reason (1)." (after entering
the name of the character).

Both after a fresh install and subsequent runs.

I still get the same error as the person above right after I name my character.
Running Android 2.1 on the Samsung Moment.

Yeah, I think this is still an issue. I think the problems reported on Samsungs
are something else than what made the app force close under Cyanogenmod etc.

Same problem still everytime I have never been able to use the app. I have a
samsung moment

I have looked into this a bit more, and it looks like the code tries to create
a hard link on the file system for use as a lock of some sort, and for some
reason, this fails on Samsung phones. I have a potential fix, which uses a
slightly different locking mechanism based on regular files, similar to what's
used on some other operating systems. This fix can be downloaded here:
http://nethack-android.googlecode.com/files/NetHack-1.2.2-samsungfix.apk.
People with Samsung phones, please give this a try if you get a chance, and let
me know if it works or not. If it doesn't work, please let me know if there is
some other error message or any other useful information. I don't have access
to a Samsung phone to test it on myself.

Marking this as fixed, as several people have reported back that it's now
working on Samsungs, and nobody has reported the opposite.
