Ignore message that doesn't have the currently defined port_message_type

Hey @derekmwright -- thanks for the pull request for this. It would be nice to have some tests around this behavior, especially since that piece of code is so painful, but since it took me 28 days to respond to your pull request, I believe the only polite thing I can do is merge your PR.
