Extension removed from chrome store and issue with remembering extension settings #29

Closed keatit71 closed 2 years ago

The worst thing is that this extension has been removed for violating something with chrome web store so people won't be able to get it anymore and secondary to that is i've been having issues with the extension forgetting I chose Celsius seemingly at random.

AppDetex, which apparently protects Mojang's copyright, sent a DMCA takedown to Google. I just found out, so I don't know if I can take immediate action. They claimed that the screenshots infringed on the Minecraft block textures. I will rename the extension to not have Minecraft in the title and use new images that do not have texture content copyrighted by Mojang.

Also, does Mojang even have copyright over the textures anymore, or is it Microsoft?

Very sad to see this use of DMCA :(

You could always have the extension downloadable on GitHub to be sidoaded for chrome.

You could use textures similar to Minecraft like faithful resource pack if you get permission from the faithful team.

Another option might be to have it as a website people can set to open on new page.

PS extension sometimes forgets my preferences as well

sawyerpollard commented 3 years ago

Is the extension forgetting preferences a new issue? I wonder if it was from the update I pushed.

keatit71 commented 3 years ago

It was random since I got your extension

vanjmali commented 3 years ago

I can confirm that it is not remembering the selected values. When restarting the browser at random times it will just reset the option.

Has anyone noticed the extension randomly forgetting units before a few days ago? I'm trying to figure out if its related to the 0.2.0 update I sent out. I made it so that when the onInstalled function is called, there's a little logic to guess the best temperature unit based on language preferences. This could be causing an issue. Or Chrome local storage doesn't work as I expected.

keatit71 commented 3 years ago

Yeah its been doing it before days ago

Does it keep going back to Fahrenheit after setting it to Celsius, or vice versa for you?

keatit71 commented 3 years ago

It goes back to Fahrenheit thought it was a default

Firefox user here, the extension is still available in the addons store, but it's still on 0.1.0 Still no problems with preferences tho

keatit71 commented 3 years ago

Maybe just a chrome issue then

vulpesfelix commented 3 years ago

Maybe just a chrome issue then

or most probably a problem caused by the new update. It's still not on Firefox so I can't say if it's just Chrome or not.

I believe I may have fixed it. Check out v0.2.1 on the GitHub releases section.

Do you think until you fix chrome store you could upload a sideloadable version

Here's Mojang's Commercial Usage Guidelines. Upon initial reading, the only issue I could find is that the 'Minecraft' in the previous title was a major part of it's marketing. Otherwise I can't find anything that restricts how you use their textures but I wonder if the photo of the Snowy Tundra from Fandom might've been licensed to them from Mojang or something similar.

Given that the extension is renamed MineWeather, it seems that the DMCA notice claims that Mojang owns all screenshots taken in Minecraft, which seems crazy.

It's What a Big Company would do, The Best solution is just to use something like faithful to avoid texture copyright

GreatSymphonia commented 3 years ago

Using a modified texture pack could not solve the problem?

keatit71 commented 3 years ago

Using a modified texture pack could not solve the problem?

i already said that the author could use something like faithful instead of actual textures but would need permission from faithful team

I uploaded a new version to the Chrome Store which was approved! So I suppose I can close this issue. I may have fixed the issue with remembering extension settings I hope. But we can create a new issue if it persists in the new version.
