Image Content Size Requirements #5

We need to decide on what the minimum / maximum resolutions are going to be
for different image types that can be pulled with the API. The resolutions
listed here are not final. We need to add more and decide on what sizes
will give the best results.

Fan art / Backdrops: Maximum Resolution - 1920x1080, Minimum Resolution -
1280x720.

Box art: Dimensions are up for debate. This is most likely dependent on
the media type (PC, Nintendo64, etc).

Marquee / Banner: Standard resolution seems to be 758x140.

Flyer / Poster: 680x1000.

Suggestions for what each image type should represent; you probably know a lot
of
this stuff but it should be clearly defined for the purposes of discussion:

Fan Art / Backdrops: Fan-submitted art typically used to embellish a media
center
display; could also serve as desktop wallpaper.

Box Art: Commercial box art for a game's release.
Flyer / Poster: Concept art? Games (especially really old ones) don't have
posters
celebrating their release.

Marquee / Banner: Small banner that identifies a series of related content. I
think
we could purpose this toward game publishers and have banners for those,
allowing
games to be sortable in this manner. Publisher names seem to be perfect in the
758 x
140 resolution mentioned by smidley.

Regarding Box Art vs. Flyer / Poster: I believe these two items represent the
same
concept and should be combined to form Box Art.

This is from the person developing the plugin for MediaBrowser:

"For the 1.0 release of the plugin, I plan on incorporating the following

Backdrops
Box Art
Platform
Synopsis
Game Rating ( stars, out of ten, or alternative)
ESRB or equivalent rating
aspect ratio (possibly)
Genre
Franchise (possibly) (example: Final Fantasy, Castlevania)

I do plan to incorporate other features as the plugin matures, but I don’t
want to
commit to too much at once. One idea that keeps floating around my head as
mentioned
by Demonseed, is the Faq/cheats documents. I need to get the core functionality
100%
before I start considering anything like this though.

As far as image sizes go, I think it’s best to use what thetvdb already
favors on
their site, 680x1000 for posters(dvd style covers) maybe something like 680x680
for
cd style covers, and something comarable for odd shaped boxes such as the super
nintendo boxes. Also 1280x720 min for backdrops. It’s up to you whether you
want to
allow smaller sizes to be uploaded to the database, because I wouldn’t be
using the
images at their full resolution. But I think it would improve to quality of the
site
and allow for more versatility with the bigger images.

I would also like it if all cross-platform games had a unique page and ID for
each
platform. For example: Dirt 2, I'm hoping to not have a bunch of PS3 specific
info
displayed to a person that has the PC version of the game. If you own the PC
version,
you don’t want to see the PS3 boxart.

Also I'd like to see the actual platforms have entries in the database. Since
I'm
going with a EHS->Platform->Game->Details page flow (Which is similar to how tv
series are organised). I'd like when the user is on the Platform Page,
depending on
the view, for the user to see a synopsis of the platform itself."

I think it is going to be extremely difficult to find high resolution cover art
for
some of games. It would be nice if there was a system in place wherean image
could
be uploaded with the option to update it with a higher resolution image if
someone
finds one.

I like that idea. Then people building plugins can choose if they want lower
resolution ones to be able to be pulled from the API.

Subject: Fanart

I like the dimensions for the fan art. Gamers are an enthusiastic lot and could
probably end up overwhelming the db with just that. I think it would be
suitable to
suggest making 1080-friendly fanarts somewhere in the documentation and
discourage
anything less.

To that end, since there is a base minimum and base maximum, presumably
hard-coded
resolutions for these pictures, is there going to be anything allowed in
between?

I don't think any resolutions in between will work since we're tailoring to a
16x9
aspect ratio.
