Among other things, this adds support for on-the-fly compression.

Thanks! Just needed your approval for merging.

CI failed on Linux while testing the Python module. That's unrelated to these changes.

I've restarted the checks. If they fail again, @philippotto or @valentin-pinkau might need to temporarily disable or fix them.
