Implements changes sugested by @fra-scality.

Also includes lint/formatting suggestions for the general area with modifications.

@fra-scality Slightly different than suggested in the ticket due to static analyzer suggestion to remove redundant conditional checks. If its not as readable I can make it match the ticket comment instead.
