I'll probably opt for having a little explanatory blurb on one of the sidebars instead of changing the interaction mode. Right now I use clicking for drawing bounding boxes, and in the future I want to use clicking in a non-labeling mode for things like "find images related to this image". Both in search and label mode a number of actions are driven by keypresses (they would be too inefficient otherwise), so I think we just need good discoverability of keyboard shortcuts.
A user will not know that mouseover + "f" can enlarge a thumbnail. I suggest clicking on thumbnail should full screen it. And then either clicking should shrink it (or potentially a close box would appear somewhere in enlarged mode.
Similar issue for play. I'm not sure what the right UI would be here. I guess ideally on mouse-hover there would be a clickable play button that appears in the top-right of the item (in both the thumbnail and enlarged modes)
