@skalarproduktraum arg this PR was working a few months ago, but I'm having a 👿 of a time getting it working again 😓

I'm wondering if we might have a better chance at providing similar behavior to N5Viewer if we do this: https://github.com/scenerygraphics/sciview/issues/516
