Hi, I've made some simplifications to the code, as well as some subjective changes. The intention wasn't really to ever be merged back to the main repo, but if you like the changes, have at 'em.

Ah, I can tell I've made too many backwards-incompatible changes for this to be of any use to you. Closing this PR.
