New subtype 'PanoramicView' under ImageObject #186

Open thadguidry opened 6 years ago

thadguidry commented 6 years ago

This new property landed in Wikidata...

panorama view 'panorama view of the object' https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P4291

Example: Förkärla Church

This might play well with the Virtual Reality mailing list discussions we've been having lately.

It would seem cleaner to create a subtype of ImageObject.

I was just looking at https://developers.google.com/streetview/spherical-metadata#example_of_a_full_photo_sphere ... hadn't noticed this issue. I'd like to do something here. /cc @samuelgoto.

There are several different ways in which panoramas can be represented in file(s) form, and some details also on how you can express how the imagery aligns with the planet. Does the Wikidata property implicitly assume an equirectangular projection?

thadguidry commented 6 years ago

@danbri it doesn't assume much...however note the comments about 360 'degree' view as a qualifier to use for perhaps noting a spherical view, but as Ainali says, hard to know if 360 degree means a frontal projection stopping at the poles are complete spherical 360,

"would field of view (P4036) work as a qualifier in this case? ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:31, 9 October 2017 (UTC) "

So it seems that the Wikidata panorama view property is useful to hold regular panoramic views, but not spherical 360 views. Wikidata will probably create a new one for spherical 360 views very shortly is my hunch. Let's poke them for that also :)

Are we Wikidata folks? I don't have a feel for how much karma you have to earn via edits before having a say in vocab creation there...

thadguidry commented 6 years ago

@danbri ?? Everyone is a Wikidata folk. Nothing about karma. Every person has an equal voice in Wikidata. Decisions are made by consensus and voting, same as here more or less.

LeadSongDog commented 6 years ago

Is there not a need to distinguish inward-looking from outward-looking views?

thadguidry commented 6 years ago

@danbri Well, I guess karma wins ? dunno :) But Thanks to Wikidata folks, they have landed 2 new properties after my asking on the mailing list. Took 2 months, but who's counting :) Here's what the mapping potentially looks like:

Proposed SUBTYPE: PhotoSphere property: aliases=3D Panorama, Photo Bubble, Spherical Photo, 360x180 image, Bubble image property: name property: locationCreated property: sameAs=https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P4640 etc.

Proposed SUBTYPE: PanoramicView property: aliases=360 Panorama View, Daguerreotype panorama property: name property: locationCreated property: sameAs=https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P4291 etc.

I have recently had some discussions with IPTC (/cc @bquinn) and XMP folks about convergence (also EXIF...) on media metadata, so I suggest we hold off on panoramas for now
