export EPUB for Equipd Bible #5

Closed ghost closed 7 years ago

ghost commented 7 years ago

Hi! I needed epub formats, different translations of the Bible (Croatian, Hungarian and Serbian) for app Equipd Bible. You mentioned in planned formats - "EPUB export is also planned (but not high priority at the moment" What's your plan for the epub format. For me it would be very important. I've been looking around on the internet but I do not find any solution. Best Regards!

schierlm commented 7 years ago

Hello erngab,

As stated on http://www.equipd.me/forums/threads/install-new-bibles.51/, Equipd Bible cannot read generic EPUB files, but only those that have been specifically "tagged"/prepared to be used with that app.

So my currently planned Epub export format, which has some focus on creating convenience features to jump to bible locations in some JavaScript enabled EPUB readers (not specifically made for Bibles), will probably not work in Equipd reader.

And as I said, the format has quite low priority for me, so I cannot promise when I will work on it again and publish it.

On the other hand, as there is a special "sub-format" of bibles used by Equipd Bible, I will have a look if I can create an export filter for that in the near future.

I don't have any iOS devices so I won't be able to test it but perhaps you want to test it for me then?

[I renamed the issue to remind me of this task :) ]

Hello schirlm I'd be happy to help, I'll test for you. You have to count on the fact that I'm not really versed in Java. http://www.equipd.me/bibles/

Hello,

see attached a German Bible that I converted (Leonberger NA28 Bibel from www.causamundi.de/bibel). Please test. The bible contains section headlines, footnotes, red letter and Strong numbers - all of which should also be in the converted bible.

Leonberger-NA28.epub.zip (zipped again as GitHub does not like epub attachments, so you have to unzip it once).

If you know any Equipd bibles that include chapter prologs, cross reference links or dictionary/keyword links, and those are shown in Equipd Bible, please tell me which file and a chapter that includes them so I can add it to the export. If not, these features will get stripped (as the current version of the export does).

If you want to try converting yourself, find attached a pre-release version of the converter with included Equipd Bible support.

BibleMultiConverter-0.0.5-pre1.zip

If it works as expected, it will be part of the upcoming 0.0.5 release.

Hi Michael,

Here is OneNote link (If for some reason you can not open, let me know) https://1drv.ms/u/s!Avwp5MCA2PZTjdso05CpXCyaku12QQ Leonberger NA28 Bible in Equipd Bible App is Ok. There is example of New World Translation (nwt-E) with cross referencess and footnote / King James Version + Strong's (KJV+S) with concordance. BibleMultiConverter I will try, when I get to the computer. I hope that it will be today (currently I have only iPad). If there's anything that I can do to help, write me (maybe something I did not understand).

@erngab: Thank you for your valuable feedback. Judging from the screenshots, it looks good.

Could you have a look (and make a screenshot) of Matthew 1:17-18? Verse 18 should have 3 footnotes and 2 cross references, and there should be a headline between verse 17 and 18.

From your text I assume chapter prologs (short texts at the beginning of a chapter that are written by the translators and tell about the background when the chapter has been originally written and what its intent was) are not supported by Equipd Bible?

schierlm commented 7 years ago

And are you sure that the https://download-a.akamaihd.net/files/media_bible/7d/nwt_E.epub was the source for your New World Translation .epub? Because when I look inside, the HTML of Genesis 1 has no cross references in verse 1:

<p id="p2" data-pid="2" class="p2 sb"><span id="pos48"></span><span id="chapter1"></span><span id="chapter1_verse1"></span><span class="w_ch"><strong>1 </strong></span>In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.</p>

I have not found chapter prologs. I've tried all 8 English Bible from Equipad Bible site. http://www.equipd.me/bibles/?utm_source=equipdbibleapp&amp;utm_medium=get_bibles&amp;utm_campaign=3.2

In these 8 Bibles (from Equipad website) was not Cross Referencess (only Footnotes and Strong's Concordance).

Cross Referencess is only in Bibles New World Translation (from https://www.jw.org/en/publications/bible/)

Screenshots in OneNote

Hello Ernest,

Thank you for the feedback. So I guess that Equipd Bible will not read cross references from EPUB but has hard-coded cross-references for New World Translation? As far as I know, the app started only supporting this bible, and since cross references are language independent, hard-coding them makes sense. Sorry I cannot do anything about this.

Can you try if the headline position is better in the attached version?

Thanks Ernest.

As it moves the verse number 18 up to the end of the previous paragraph, I think it is better to leave it as it was in first version (here the headline is in the wrong paragraph, but the verse number is at the right place when viewing the whole chapter).

Unless you have a bible where it is better, then I would have a look at how they are doing it.

schierlm commented 7 years ago

I changed my mind, and decided to make it an option for the exporter where to put the headlines. That way, everybody can decide by themselves if the headlines should be at the beginning of the verse, at the end, or not exported at all.

This feature is part of the just released version 0.0.5.
