Remarks on the Dutch translation and general remarks

Hi, I’m a Monero user and enthusiast and my wife is a speech therapist. As a speech therapist she is an expert on Dutch language; she knows next to nothing about Monero. We discussed the booklet and the Dutch translation. Since I want to use your booklet, I want it to be right. Hope this helps!

Remarks Dutch translation on the Monero booklet

General remark! Now: The digital future of cash. –> De digitale toekomst van contant geld. – while the translation is correct, people who never heard of monero have no clue what it is. Monero might even be a bank. – it is not the digital future, it is the digital now.

Better would be: Monero is a digital alternative for cash. –> Monero is een digitaal alternatief voor contant geld.

Now: Monero for Merchants –> Monero voor verkopers A “verkoper” is a salesman. A person that works in a shop and tries to sell you something.

Better would be: Monero for Merchants –> Monero voor winkeliers A “winkelier” is a shopowner like the baker or the florist.

After this I should even add a little explanation of what Monero is, because people have no clue!: Monero is a digital currency (like bitcoin). Monero is developed for safe digital payments.

In Dutch: Monero is een digitaal betaalmiddel (net als bitcoin). Monero is ontwikkeld om veilig digitaal te kunnen betalen.

Now: Monero transactions are private and untraceable by default –> Monero transacties zijn inherent privé en niet-traceerbaar

Better would be: Monero transacties zijn privé en niet-traceerbaar. – The word “ inherent” is not commonly used and doesn’t add anything.

Now: Through the use of cryptographic techniques, the receipt of payments is secure and unalterable. –> Door het gebruik van geavanceerde cryptografische technieken is de ontvangst van betalingen veilig en onveranderlijk

Better would be: Door het gebruik van geavanceerde cryptografische technieken is de ontvangst van betalingen veilig en niet te beïnvloeden – More commonly used language.

Now: Acceptance –> Aanvaarding

Better would be: Acceptance -> Ontvangst – More commonly used language.

Now: Accept payments from customers locally or worldwide without expensive fees or waiting times. –> Accepteer betalingen van klanten lokaal of wereldwijd, zonder dure kosten of wachttijden.

Better is: Ontvang betalingen van klanten lokaal of wereldwijd, zonder hoge kosten of wachttijden. – More commonly used language. – “dure kosten” is wrong in Dutch.

Now: Monero is a community currency that is not controlled by a central authority. –> Monero is een gemeenschapsvaluta die niet wordt beheerd door een centrale authoriteit.

Better is: Monero wordt niet beheerd door een centrale autoriteit, maar door de decentraal georganiseerde monero-community. – More commonly used language. – Community is also a dutch word.

Now: Be part of the revolution –> Maak deel uit van de revolutie. The translation is correct, but:

Better is: Contribute to a better world –> Werk mee aan een betere wereld. – The florist doesn’t want a revolution, she wants to sell flowers and probably contribute to a better world.

Now: With Monero, you are not only a trader, but also a pioneer in the new era of digital commerce. It’s not just a question of technology, but also of trust, community and the future.

Wrong, better is: With Monero, you are not only a trader, but also a pioneer in the new era of digital commerce. It’s not just a question of technology, but also of trustability, community and a safer future.

In Dutch that is: Met monero ben je niet alleen een winkelier, maar ook een pionier in het nieuwe tijdperk van digitale handel. Het is niet alleen een kwestie van technologie, maar ook van betrouwbaarheid, gemeenschap en een veiliger toekomst.

– Trader is handelaar in Dutch. In this context “winkelier” is better –> common language! – “ it’s also about trust”. Why should I trust Monero or it’s community or whatever? I know fiat, that’s what I trust, right? (as a flowerist that is) – “a matter of the future” is strange, “a matter of a safer future” is a lot better.

Now: Fast transactions: Receive payments in allmost real time. –> Snelle transacties (No capital t): Ontvang betalingen vrijwel in realtime.

Better is: Ontvang betalingen vrijwel onmiddellijk.

Now: New customer: Appeal to the growing community of crypto enthusiasts –> Nieuwe klanten: Betrek de groeiende gemeenschap van crypto-enthousiastelingen.

Wrong translation! Should be: Nieuwe klanten: Speel in op de groeiende gemeenschap van crypto-enthousiastelingen.

Now: Future-proof: stay up to date with technological developments and trends –> Toekomstbestendig: Blijf op de hoogte van technologische ontwikkelingen en trends.

Wrong translation. Should be: Blijf up to date met de technologische ontwikkelingen en trends. –“Blijf op de hoogte” in this context means that you will get informed (with developments etc).

Now: “Thanks for accepting Monero.” –> <<Bedankt, dat u Monero accepteert.>> Better is: Bedankt voor het accepteren van Monero. (Without the comma) – Common language.

Lastly:

The “ sign on the English version has become the << sign in the Dutch version. <<Smartphone met internet en klaar!>> <<Bedankt .. >> The “ sign is better, also in Dutch.
