I think adding AsciiName to mmark will fix this rendering issue, but I rather dislike that solution as chosen by the XML2RFC v3 working group.

it might be nice to make mmark automatically detect this which it can, however I don't think it can propose an AsciiName attribute value

Update: xml2rfc 3.8.0 and 3.11.0 (two versions I tried) actually renders this correct in html and text, so looks to be fixed on that side.
