Is this to translate the user contributed texts? Or something else?
I think Cecilia's primary thinking here was in relation to the user contributed texts. For example, right now it doesn't do a whole lot to change the instructions into German or French but leave the main text an English version by Joyce.
How would this work with user contributions?
Ok so here was my concern: it seems odd to me that we are translating the instructions about how to interact with the tool but if you don't speak English you can't actually interact with the tool. After talking with Gwen though I realized that as long as user contributions can happen in various languages then it solves the problem. I think one of our first few new texts should be in some other language so it is clear that we are not just gesturing towards language accessibility but actually creating a tool that works across linguistic difference.
Right, so the translation does not apply to user contributions. Only the web content that we author will be translated-- this is the same as last year's version of Prism.
To update with current status:
We're no longer concerned with the translation of uploaded texts, since those can be uploaded in a variety of languages. But would be good to offer fuller and more robust translations of the instructions/about page/etc. of the tool. So I'll leave open for now.
We should discuss how the translation works in relation to the texts themselves. The instructions are translated now, but the texts are not. I pinged Cecilia on this only because I know that she is invested/the one who brought this up.
