If you do want to use commands as root, from the pi user you can simplify.
Instead of editing /etc/sudoers with visudo as you currently do you could either:
visudo
/etc/sudoers.d/pi
echo 'pi ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL ' > /etc/sudoers.d/pi
sudo
adduser pi sudo
Closing due to inaction, and the fact that it's a suggestion / matter of taste.
