sup g's, I've setup x2go for remote desktop sharing, which is essentially an open source alternative to vnc and the like. ánd it's easier to setup. here's some info about it, there are clients for all kind of OS'es: https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/X2Go/

additionally it's running on port 22 (ssh) so your usual ssh login works when connecting to the server via x2go. for me it seems to work just fine, would be good to see if it works as good for you.
