The current behavior, that HERE is replaced by the location of the input file, is convenient but could lead to problems.

Consider:

allowing the user to override or deactivate this (perhaps in a section like the environment setion)
using something less likely to clash and more obvious, like $SCIATH_INPUT_FILE_LOCATION, $SCIATH_HERE, or even $HERE
