[v1.0.3 macOS 10.12, ubuntu 16.04] initial sync very slow, high CPU #99

Some users are reporting initial sync being very slow (~10 mins) on fast internet connections, and high CPU usage (100-200%) at the same time. Downloading the same dataset with dat CLI takes a few seconds, so there's a performance regression further downstream, probably search-index.
