Fitting the peaks is required for the calibration procedure if you don't know the wavelength or the detector distance:

Calibration procedure:
- Position the detector, measure the standard pattern
- move the detector, measure the standard pattern again
- fit the first few diffraction peaks and compare the shift to determine the wavelength

Fit individual peak or whole spectrum together? I don't hope that we need to touch GSAS.
