chore: use Self #398

Pulling just this change out of #392 to make that one easier to review.

These are nice improvements but I cannot get to fix MyPy with the latest version. As such, and to move forward, I'm reverting the version of MyPy while keeping all other improvements. This is pragmatic at this point.

Let's get back to the issue in the future.
