Using a capacitive touch surface on the outside of the knob would allow for disabling the magnetic sensor/display to conserve energy in battery powered devices.
This would also make UI options like letting go of the knob or tapping the knob to interact possible.
Most of this could probably be done using the strain gauges but capacitive sensing allows for detection before the user even touches the knob, allowing the user to wake the display by hovering over the knob.
