one opml file with 1 or more feeds into one category #147

Can I create an OPML file where all feeds are put into one category automatically on Feedland? (Basically the reverse of feedtoMasto)

What I'm trying to do: using Resstodon, https://researchbuzz.me/2022/11/28/generate-hashtag-based-rss-feeds-for-7-popular-mastodon-instances-with-resstodon/

I want to aggregate hashtags (and variations of..) example: mac, macsoftware, macos, etc and have them flow into category "Mac"

Is this possible? or do I have to edit categories after importing?

I saw this page: http://hosting.opml.org/dave/spec/category.opml

and tried adding it into my opml file as a test. But it was not added into category.

@moosebegab -- this sounds fascinating. i don't understand what Resstodon does, but I read the writeup, and whoever wrote that is definitely my kind of person.

Let me see if I understand what you want to do.

You have an OPML file that say contains 20 feeds all about the PGA (the golfer's league).

You want to assign that OPML file to a category, "PGA".

And presumably when the OPML file changes, the files in the category change too.

If that's what you want, can you provide an example of such an OPML file?

Yes, that's exactly what I want to do. (except I didn't think far enough to this part "And presumably when the OPML file changes, the files in the category change too." )

hmm.. looking at the Resstodon opml I realized it searches for one tag through multiple Mastodon instances where as I want several tags from one instance in particular (mastodon.social.)

I have 2 main hashtags pinned in my mastodon.social #7books and #mac and I was able to add some variations to those columns but the "add tag" function there is a bit finicky.

So I thought what if I make an opml file (using Resstodon as base) and list all the hashtags I want in that file then upload and read on Feedland (because I have too many columns pinned on Mastodon.)

Here is the original Restodon file I got when searching for #7books : Mastodon_Hashtag_OPML_FileFor'7books.txt

Why not put carriage returns and tabs in the OPML file? It's impossible to read without them.

Now you're going above my brain capacity. I couldn't upload opml directly so I changed to txt file.

I'll keep pondering and see if I can figure stuff out. If all else fails, I can just add hashtags and categorize manually. No biggie. Thanks. : )

We're going to figure this out. You're one of our best users. And I'm into supporting our best users. 😀

Did my description sound correct? If I implemented that would it help?

moosebegab commented 1 year ago

Yes, your description sounded correct. Yes, I think it would help.

I don't want to waste your time on things beyond scope of software or things maybe only "I" am interested in.

In other words, I don't want to take advantage of your niceness : )

Okay, I won’t let you take advantage of my niceness. 😳

I have a category tab called 7Books on Feedland. I've collected book-related hashtags on Mastodon and created rss feeds for each hashtag.

I want all these book-related hashtag rss feeds to go into 7Books category.

Currently, I have to go to each rss feed to edit the categories. Is there a way to automate this... within opml file? or bulk edit feeds/categories?

Here are my book-related hashtag feeds:

https://mastodon.social/tags/7Books.rss https://mastodon.social/tags/7RecentBooks.rss https://mastodon.social/tags/AmReading.rss https://mastodon.social/tags/Books.rss https://mastodon.social/tags/BookReview.rs https://mastodon.social/tags/Bookstodon.rss https://mastodon.social/tags/CurrentlyReading.rss https://mastodon.social/tags/ToBeRead.rss
