Closing the loop on the new identity system #172

Open scripting opened 1 year ago

scripting commented 1 year ago

Next up -- I created a test server at dw.lucky.wtf.

Hopefully its name conveys how temporary it is.

This is a place where you can try the new version of FeedLand.

It's the same product as on feedland.org except it uses the new identity system based on email.

This could use testing, and I would appreciate it if people could give it a try.

The usual stuff we were doing earlier in the process. Subscribe to feeds, unsub, read news, look at the user list, browse around their feeds, etc etc. I'll come up with a list a bit later.

This server does not have at this time the ability for personal feeds or news products.

It really does need a burn in so I think you in advance for helping! :-)

How to sign up on dw.lucky.wtf

  1. This is the first release of the new mechanism for creating a user account in FeedLand, so it's a good idea to say in one place, how to do that.

  2. Go to dw.lucky.wtf. You should be greeted by a dialog inviting you to sign in or sign up. Click the Sign up button.

  3. A dialog appears asking you to enter a name and an email address. Both must be unique. The name must be at least four characters long. The dialog will tell you as you type if the name you've entered is available. When you're ready click the Send button.

  4. You're prompted to check your email. When you do there should be an email whose subject is "FeedLand confirmation". There's a link in the email. Click it.

  5. You should be taken back to your FeedLand instance. A dialog asking if you want to subscribe to a few feeds to get started.

I signed up and followed a bunch of feeds and tried some common features, all good, all familiar, no surprises so far.

@akaKenSmith -- I just went through it myself, and found it hard to believe that everything seems to just work. All the changes were at the lowest levels in the code, the interactive parts are the same code we're using over on the "real" server.

It was kind of like jacking up a house and putting in a new foundation and then jacking it back down and reconnecting all the wiring and pipes. I guess you could cook a dinner in the kitchen, eat it in the dining room, and retire to the study for drinks and to smoke cigars and wouldn't know the difference. ;-)

I signed up and tested last night. No issues, everything that I tried worked.

I turned this server off, so the test is done.
