New UI coming? #88

Open scripting opened 2 years ago

This sometimes happens when the user interface of a product is complicated but you think underneath it all there is a simplicity waiting to be discovered. Solving it is like solving a hard crossword puzzle. There are parts to it that only come once the other easier parts are already in place.

I don't want to write up the whole idea here, that would spoil the fun, but I did want to post a teaser to give you an idea for part of what might be next.

Here's the next step --

What's going on here. I chose the user as brianjesse. Automatically the third popup changes to reflect his categories.

When I select one of them I can see either his feeds or the news based on that category. That's what the second popup is for.

And when I change any one of the menus, the content of the window changes to reflect how the menus are arranged.

So you can fly around among various users, their categories and news or feeds.

Your own stuff is easiest to find with "Me" at the top of the first popup. It resoves to whatever your name is.

The code is very tight and really wild and really fucking fast!

And one more thing -- the address bar changes every time you switch so if you copy the URL it's a permalink to that setting.

And the Back button works too.

Most of this is not yet working. And I feel like the "hard stuff" is behind me. But that usually is an illusion. Let's see how it turns out, but my session for today is done. See ya tomorrow.

Obviously very much a construction site. ;-)

  1. I moved the buttons up into the menu bar to get them out of the way, and introduced a crumb trail.

  2. There's now a space for the "content" that's specified by the crumb trail, and you can see the list that's displayed. All the feeds that mistersugar is subscribed to. If you chose a different category you'd see only the feeds from that category. The XML icon will adjust accordingly to only provide the items in that category.

  3. I'm pausing now to think some more about my next steps. Planning another session for this afternoon. I'm in a rush to get this funcdtional so I can see what we got, but I think this is what the "top" of the product will be. I've been struggling to find this ever since the project started, oh I guess about 22 years ago.

Thanks for sharing this process work on such a fine-grain level. The process verbs here are inspiring: thinking, finding, waiting to be discovered. It reminds me of the glimpses of training of younger team members you mentioned in the Edit The Page posting that you linked to the other day. Adventure on ....

Thanks @akaKenSmith -- having an audience for this is very good for the process. Usually there's no place for me to publish this stuff, because writing it publicly creates a commitment.

Update -- In keeping with "narrating my work" -- 'm taking the day off from the New UI? project. It's a rainy day, got a late start and at 1PM are the Jan 6 hearings. I started off the day writing, and I need a fresh look at this. It might be good to do for a 2.0, and just back off for now and stay on the previous path. I'll see tomorrow when I get a fresh start.

I've put everything back the way it was, supposedly, so if there was any breakage (there was, sorry) it should be working again as before.

Still diggin!
