Anime, Sonarr and Series Type - making Series Type Configurable #3777

Description

There's a whole magnitude of reasons why the "Anime Series Type" implementation at sonarr is a whole can of worms, both for older shows (naruto, one piece, pokemon etc.) and newer shows (mostly using normal season and episode numbering). Please see here for further info:

https://github.com/Sonarr/Sonarr/issues/6495

The tl;dr version is:

  1. User requests anime through overseerr
  2. Overseerr has no configurable option for Anime, Series Type: Anime is the only option and Overseerr will assign this to everything it thinks is Anime
  3. Sonarr will automatically search based on Absolute episode type and aliases. For something like Naruto, it may cost 5-7 hits per episode. It won't search by Season, because the Series Type: Anime is used.
  4. So for 50 episodes, you may even get upwards of 500 API hits and not get what you want, high quality season packs are ignored for random non-English releases (especially now that Sonarr v4 has done away with language on quality profiles) and low quality single episodes from usenet.
  5. All at the cost of 100's of API searches, which causes unnecessary stress on indexers and could mean repercussions for you.

Desired Behavior

Allow users to have a default setting for Anime Series Type. Allow users to choose 'Standard' as the default setting for Anime https://i.imgur.com/D5ZNdF8.png

The most popular tracker for Anime: AnimeBytes does not use single episodes for non-Airing Anime. Season pack searches should be the main focus when requesting seasons via Overseerr. Everything could be finished in a matter of just 4-5 searches per Season, rather than 100 searches for 10 episodes.

The other option:

Allow users to not automatically search for Anime on Sonarr, so that the user can fulfil the request manually. Anime is extremely hard to get right automatically and due to Overseerr hardcoding the Anime implementation and forcing users to use Anime Series Type, we're stuck with the bad implementation from sonarr.

Joining in - this is an issue any updates on this? edited Thought I may elaborate a little. I tried to created a different sonarr connection from overseer and enter details of the anime recommendations under the "TV option" it still tagged it as Series Type: Anime - resulting the inability to search for old animes that are divided into seasons. (as season packs) - old animes usually no longer maintain downloads per episode, and only exist as a season pack
