That is actually a (last minute) security fix you're bitten by. Please check
your
'network.proxy.socks_remote_dns' setting in about:config . Also what are
your network.proxy.socks and network.proxy.socks_port settings?

Here are details requested from about:config
Preference Name Status Type Value
------------------------------ -------- ------- -----
network.proxy.socks_remote_dns user set boolean true
network.proxy.socks user set string localhost
network.proxy.socks_port user set integer 9050
network.proxy.socks_version default integer 5
I haven't set a proxy myself, possibly Kaspersky Internet Security has done it
because it scans inbound & outbound http traffic. I don't want to go upsetting
Kaspersky, because it took ages getting it setup.
But why the security fix? everything was working great with the last
pre-release.

Also, it now no longer shows the local IP either, and when I hover the cursor
over
ShowIP area on the status bar, a popup appears saying:-
DNS resolution disabled due to SOCKS proxy (network.proxy.socks_remote_dns)

Well you've to turn socks_remote_dns off then like the message suggests...

Hi Jan,
This is getting confusing... According to this bugzilla article, remote DNS
should be
on (as per Firefox default setting).
Bug 134105 - SOCKS5: DNS lookups (host resolving) should occur on proxy, not
client
side.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=134105
Which should it be on or off? Who is correct you or Mozilla?
What are the benefits of each method and why are we given the choice if it
breaks things?
Regards, Vic

Well if you're using a SOCKS proxy (do you?) and you turned socks_remote_dns
on, you
usually don't want any DNS queries to prevent leaking the information on what
site
you're browsing to the authorities. Thus DNS queries are a security risk in that
case. This is, why I chose to disable then.
But you're correct that the addon should also test if the SOCKS proxy is
enabled at
all. Will be fixed in the next upload.

I assume by "SOCKS proxy" you just mean a normal proxy (as used by TOR etc). My
Firefox is set to "No Proxy". I've made no changes to Firefox config since it
was
installed. Remote DNS resolving is on by default, as recommended by Mozilla.
Yes, it's a good idea for an addon to test if a proxy is in use and I look
forward to
the next version when ShowIP is working properly again. In the meantime, I'll
revert
back to 0.8.15pre1.xpi.
Thanks & Regards,
Vic

Please try http://firefox-showip.googlecode.com/files/showip_0.8.17pre1.xpi

I installed showip_0.8.17pre1.xpi about 5 mins ago, so far everything looks
good.
I shall test it further today, and let you know if there's any problems, but it
Looks
like this issue is fixed and ShowIP is working as expected again.
Thanks, Vic
